Conductors

The Varna International Music Academy (VIMA) offers a variety of unique summer programs for conductors:

  • One-week CHORAL conducting workshop during the Varna International Choral Festival
  • One-week INSTRUMENTAL conducting workshop during the Varna International Choral Festival
  • Stabat Mater, Rossini, 12-day CHORAL-ORCHESTRALb Conducting Workshop during VIMA

Our Conducting Programs are designed for conductors with moderate to advanced conducting skills. Conducting Fellows and Conducting Associates study with the conducting faculty and with other guest conductors and clinicians. Conducting Fellows are guaranteed ample daily podium time with the resident choir and orchestra. Associate Conductors will have limited podium time with the resident choir (no orchestral podium time). Registration is open to maximum 10 conducting fellows.

Each fellow conducting will receive a minimum of 200 minutes podium time throughout the workshop during the detailed score study, choral rehearsals, orchestral rehearsals, rehearsals with soloists’ and piano, and tutti. Each fellow will conduct a portion of Rossini, Stabat Mater during the first performance of the work. The second performance will be conducted by the Maestro.

All VIMA 2022 programs are eligible for academic credit through Coastal Carolina University. For more information, please email our office and we will put you in touch with the university's coordinator.

CHORAL Conducting Workshop July 2-6 (arrival: July 1; departure on July 7)

Inclusions

  • Daily rehearsal time with the Academy Chorus, featuring choral repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque era and choral works by Russian and American composers.
  • Each Conducting Fellow will receive a minimum 120 minutes of podium time throughout the workshop
  • Two conducting sessions addressing conducting technique and detailed score study with pianist, led by the conducting faculty
  • Conducting Fellows will conduct a portion of the choral repertoire at the public performance
  • A video-recording of your podium time during the public performance
  • 6 nights lodging at Coastal Carolina University residences (double occupancy)
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily (7 days a week)

INSTRUMENTAL Conducting Workshop (chamber music) July 2-5 (arrival: July 1; departure: July 6)

Inclusions

  • Daily rehearsal time with the Academy string ensemble, featuring chamber music
  • Each Conducting Fellow will receive minimum 100 minutes of podium time throughout the workshop
  • Two conducting sessions with the Maestro and a quintet for detailed score study
  • Two rehearsals with the full chamber ensemble
  • Hands-on training by conducting faculty
  • Masterclasses including score study and instruction on conducting techniques and styles
  • Fellows will conduct a portion of the Academy chamber repertoire in a public performance
  • A video-recording of your podium time during the public performance
  • 5 nights lodging at Coastal Carolina University residences (double occupancy)
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily (7 days a week)

Stabat Mater, Rossini – CHORAL-ORCHESTRAL Conducting Workshop July 2-14, 2022 (Arrival: July 1; departure: July 15)

Conductors:
First Concert: The Academy Conducting Fellows
Second Concert: Maestro Gregory Buchalter, Metropolitan Opera

Inclusions

  • Ample, daily podium time with the Academy Chorus and Orchestra, featuring Stabat Mater, by Rossini. Conducting Associates will conduct only during rehearsals; Conducting Fellows will conduct during rehearsals as well as conduct one movement of STABAT Mater by Rossini during one of the final public performances.
  • Each Conducting Fellow will receive a minimum of 200 minutes podium time throughout the workshop during the detailed score study, choral rehearsals, orchestral rehearsals, rehearsals with soloists’ and piano, and tutti.
  • Participation in the Chamber music conducting workshop
  • Hands-on training by the Academy’s conducting faculty, including score study and instruction on conducting techniques and styles.
  • A video-recording of your podium time during the public performance.
  • 14 nights lodging at Coastal Carolina University residences (double occupancy)
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily (7 days a week)
